San Antonio is gearing up for celebrations to mark the centennial of the construction of the Old Spanish Trail (OST) Auto Highway. In the 1920s, the OST connected six historically significant cities–St. Augustine, New Orleans, San Antonio, El Paso, Tucson and San Diego– opening up automobile tourism to the southern part of the United States. A section of the OST ran through San Antonio along Fred Road between Bihl Haus and I-10, the area now known as the Deco District. Model-A’s, the first affordable cars that opened auto tourism to middle-class Americans, would have been common sites toodling along the OST.
Don’t have a Model-T to take the tour? That’s ok. Any kind of wheels will do. You can get here by car, bus or bike, or take a combination of all three! Fredericksburg Road is the busiest bus-service corridor in the City. Buses run up and down Fred every few minutes, even on weekends (see the chart below). And VIA Primo makes getting here that much easier–and definitely faster! Primo connects the Deco District with Downtown, the Medical Center, and the South Park Mall area. Primo stops in the Deco District are marked by P on the map, and regular city bus stops occur every few blocks not only on Fred Road but on Blanco and Hildebrand as well. However you choose to take the tour, we look forward to seeing you during the 12th Annual On & Off Fredericksburg Road Studio Tour!
